This chapter contains the data found by prominent studies in the world. The sources range from newspapers and journals to government data to some popular online sites.

India:

India was ranked No.1 among the top twenty countries for road crashes with crash severity of 31.4, followed by China (29.64), before the Covid outbreak. A total of 4,03,116 road accident cases were reported in 2021 alone, according to data from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB). Every year, approximately 1.5 lakh people die in India due to road accidents, which translates, on an average, into 18 deaths every hour. In 2022, there were 1,55,622 deaths in the country due to road accidents.


ICICI Lombard Study: 

-- India accidents for 15% of all road accidents in
    the world. 
-- Nearly 1.5% of road accidents are caused due
-- Every minute a traffic-related death occurs in
    India.
-- Approximately 377 people die every day.
-- Country's annual loss at approximately 3% of
    GDP 
    to bad roads.
-- Every day millions of people commute along a
    broad network of over 33 lakh km stretch of
    Indian roadways.
-- Globally, India is at the 90th rank in road quality and safety. The number of road accidents has been increasing steadily at the rate of 10-15% every year. There seems to be a serious gap in road safety standards and systems. 
-- Maximum accidents occur during monsoons when road conditions deteriorate. 
-- According to experts, many road accidents go unregistered and the actual figure of casualties could be much over 10,000 per year. 
-- Maximum road accidents due to negligent or reckless driving practices and negligence in taking personal safety measures. 


● WHO projected annual road traffic deaths in
the world at around 2 million by 2020.
● WHO studies highlight that only 15% of all countries in the world have comprehensive laws in relation to 5 key risks:
-- Speeding 
-- Drinking and driving 
-- Non-use of helmets and seat belts
-- Child restraints
