FAMOUS ROAD ACCIDENTS
This chapter depicts the fatal road accidents of a number of world-famous people from Nobel laureate Pierre Curie to another Nobel laureate Alburt Camus to Princess Diana to Cyrus Mistry, describing the detail situations, founded and unfounded possible causes. The aim of the chapter is to create a strong impression in the mind that even powerful people are helpless before road accidents, thus imparting mindfulness. 



The below are some famous persons who have died in road accidents.

Diana Spencer
Princess of Wales

(July 1, 1961 -- August 31, 1997)
Died at the age of 36

Mercedes-Benz W140
Place of accident: Pont de I'Alma, Paris

Cause of accident
While fleeing from paparazzi the car slammed into a support column of the tunnel they were traveling through. The driver, Henri Paul, was drunk according to the investigators. 
Others who died: Dodi Al Fayed, Diana's partner

Cyrus Mistry 
Former Tata Sons Chairman

(July 4, 1968 -- September 4, 2022)
Died at the age of 54

Mercedes-Benz
Place of accident:
Mumbai-Ahmedabad highway in Palgarh district of Maharashtra. 

Alleged cause:
Multiple driving offences, namely, 1) Negligence, 2) Rash driving, 3) Over-speeding, 4) Overtaking, 5) Not following lane discipline.
(Rash and negligent driving caused difficulty in merging the vehicle into the second lane from the third lane.)
Driver: Dr. Anahita Pandole
Mistry and his friend, Jahangir Pandole, were riding on the back seat and were not wearing the seat belt.

(1986/87 -- February 23, 2024)
Died at the age of 37

Maruti XL6 SUV

                              Alleged cause:
The driver fell asleep at the wheel and the car rammed into a barrier.

Died at the age of 57

Cause of accident
The jeep he was traveling in collided with a truck.

Saheb Singh Verma 
Politician. Former Chief Minister of Delhi and National Vice President of the BJP

(1943-1998)
Died at the age of 64

Cause of accident 
The Tata Safari SUV he was traveling in had a head-on collision with a truck when the truck driver swerved out of control after trying to avoid a cyclist.

Gopinath Munde 
BJP politician and a key figure in Maharashtra's OBC circle.

(1949--2014)
Died at the age of 64

Cause of accident 
A speeding cab, which cut through a red light, rammed into his side of the compact sedan he was traveling in.

Nandamuri Harikrishna
Actor and Politician 

(1956--2018)
Died at the age of 61

Cause of accident
He was driving a Toyota Fortuner without seat belt when his car crashed into a road median.

Sonika Chauhan
Model, actress, TV host

(1989--2017)
Died at the age of 27

Cause of accident 
Actor Vikram Chatterjee was driving the car they were traveling in at over 100 kmph when the car veered away and collided with a jewelry store at a Kolkata's avenue.

K. P. Bhattacharya
Indian Folk Singer

(1970--2017)
Died at the age of 56

Cause of accident
Their car was hit by a truck from behind on the NH2 highway. The other three passengers were also killed.

Crusader against suicide and depression

(1987--2017)
Died at the age of 29

Cause of accident 
Her husband who was driving the car lost control of the vehicle and rammed into a median.

Indian Olympian Athlete

(1981--2016)
Died at the age of 35

Cause of accident 
Yet contended. It was first reported to be a hit-and-run case.

Indian Entrepreneur, Founder of Qyunki, a digital marketing company.

(1975--2020)
Died at the age of 45

Cause of accident
He was driving his BMW S1000R superbike when he collided with a truck on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad National Highway.

Saksham Yadav 
Indian Powerlifter

(1993--2018)
Died at the age of 28

Cause of accident 
He was traveling with other five powerlifters on the Delhi-Panipat highway in foggy conditions. All were under the influence of alcohol when their car met with an accident and all of them died.

Ashwin Sundar 
Race Driver, India

(1985-2017)
Died at the age of 31

Cause of accident
The BMW he was traveling in smashed into a tree, and was pinned against a wall as the car burst into flames. His doctor wife, who was with him, also died in that horrific crash.

Died at the age of 34

Cause of accident
Drunk driving 
(Blood alcohol level 0.196% at the time of death)
The car veered off and struck a tree and the car burst into flames.

Monisha Unni 
Indian film actress
The youngest actress ever to receive the National Film Award in 1986 for best actress at the age of 16.

(January 24, 1971 -- December 5, 1992)
Died at the age of 21

Cause of accident 
A bus which was overtaking their car rammed it. The road where the accident took place was a junction and the time was late night. "I think our driver may have dozed off for a second.", said Sreedevi Unni, Monisha Unni's mother, who survived the accident.

American rapper and singer

(May 27, 1971 -- April 25, 2002)
Died at the age of 30

Cause of accident 
She was speeding and lost control of her rental SUV as she swerved off the road to avoid hitting another vehicle.

American actor

(September 12, 1973--November 30, 2013)
Died at the age of 40

Cause of accident 
Over-speeding (speed of the car over 100 mph in a 45 mph zone)
Others who died: His friend, Roger Rodas, who was driving the car.

 American professional wrestler, rapper and former professional baseball player.

(November 15, 1952 -- May 20, 2011)
Died at the age of 58

Cause of accident 
He had a heart attack while he was driving his car and lost control of the vehicle.

American professional wrestler. He was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame class of 2004.

(December 13, 1952 -- June 1, 1998)
Died at the age of 45

Cause of accident 
He fell asleep at the wheel of the car he was driving home in and crashed into another car.

Charles Pete Conrad Jr
American NASA astronaut, aeronautical engineer, naval officer and aviator, and test pilot. He became the third man to walk on the Moon during the Apollo 12 mission. He was the winner of the Congressional Space Medal of Honor in 1978.

Died at the age of 69

Cause of accident 
Internal injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident.

British archeologist, army officer, diplomat, and writer. He was famous as Lawrence of Arabia for his liaison role during the First World War. 

(August 16, 1888 -- May 19, 1935)
Died at the age of 46

Cause of accident 
He swerved his motorcycle to avoid hitting two boys on bicycles.

French physicist, Nobel Prize winner in physics in 1903

(May 15, 1859 -- April 19, 1906)
Died at the age of 46

Cause of accident 
He fell in the road and his skull was crushed under the wheel of a horse drawn cart.

Died at the age of 42

Cause of accident 
He lost control of the car when trying to light a cigar.

American chemist, businessman, art collector, writer, and educator 

(January 2, 1872 -- July 24, 1951)
Died at the age of 79

Cause of accident 
He missed a stop sign and was hit by a truck.

John Champlin Gardner
American novelist, essayist, literary critic and university professor
Best known for his 1971 novel 'Grendel'

(July 21, 1933 -- September 14, 1982)
Died at the age of 49

Cause of accident 
He lost control of his motorcycle on a sharp turn.

French philosopher, author, and journalist. 1957 Nobel Prize winner in literature at the age of 44. He is the second youngest recipient in Nobel history.

(November 7, 1913 -- January 4, 1960)
Died at the age of 46

Cause of accident 
The Facel Vega car he was traveling in veered off the road and hit as Michel Gallimard, his friend and publisher, who was behind the wheel lost control of the vehicle. 
Believed as the result of a Soviet plot.

Called the 'Father of the Blood Bank'

June 3, 1904 -- April 1, 1950
Died at the age 46

Cause of accident 
He fell asleep at the wheel while driving to a conference (single-car crash).

John Forbes Nash, Jr.
Mathematician and Economist
Winner of the Nobel Memorial Prize in economics (1994) and the Abel Prize (2015).

June 13, 1928 -- May 23, 2015
Died at the age of 86

Cause of accident 
While Nash was returning home with his wife in a taxi from receiving the Abel Prize in Norway, the cab lost control as the driver tried to overtake another vehicle.

Alexander Dubcek
Leader of Czechoslovakia

November 27, 1921 -- November 7, 1992
Died at the age of 70

Cause of accident 
His accident is yet contended. One investigation rules that his driver was driving the car at excessive speed in rainy weather and that Dubcek's death was due to aquaplaning.

Andrew Symonds
Australian Cricketer

June 9, 1975 -- May 14, 2022
Died at the age of 46

Cause of accident 
While driving on Hervey Range Road near the Alice River Bridge in Queensland his car left the road and rolled. It was a single-car accident.

Jayne Mansfield
Actress

April 19, 1933 -- June 29, 1967
Died at the age of 34

Cause of accident 
The Electra car she was riding struck the rear of a trailer truck. Her driver couldn't see due to the white fog being emitted by a machine to spray mosquitoes. The driver, her lawer and ex-husband all died in the accident.

Princess of Monaco

November 12, 1929 -- September 14, 1982
Died at the age of 52

Cause of accident 
While driving her Rover P6 3500 sedan she lost control of the vehicle on a steep, winding road 
    and fell down the 37-meter mountainside.
